 <uL>A duke of hell and demon of great power, Astaroth’s dominion lies over serpents, the sciences, and the secrets of all things. He is said to answer truthfully and willingly any question posed to him, which he does . . . sort of. Misusing and misrepresenting the truth is what he does best, and it serves him well in the various (and hardly legal) jobs he takes under his mortal alias, as well the temptation he continues to carry out for his infernal office. He rarely outright lies, but his tongue is silver enough for him to flatter, cajole, and appeal his way into or out of nearly any situation — perhaps because his own vanity and arrogance knows few limits. His habit, however, is only to target those who would be most convenient or advantageous for him, whatever or whomever might yield the greatest gain for the least effort. Incidentally, the instant a situation appears to be turning even the slightest bit sour, his favored plan B is to cut his losses and beat a hasty retreat; if he finds himself backed into a corner, his first instinct is to lash out with a violent temper. He prefers also to keep his associations with other demons minimal, as the subject of his Fall — which he claims to have been a great and undeserved injustice against himself — is still something he regards with bitterness and contempt.
